Ask to stay back a class year after lateraling?

Without getting too deep into the details, I lateraled to a new firm last summer as a fifth-year associate, which matched my total years of corporate practice. However, most of my prior experience wasn’t directly related to the type of work I’m doing now (which I had disclosed in my interview). I think I’m generally doing fine, but I don’t feel like I’m operating at the level you’d expect from a full-fledged fifth-year in this practice yet.

My promotion to sixth year is coming up in a few months, and I’ve been considering whether to raise the possibility of staying back a year so I can build more experience in this area before moving up. I don't mind foregoing the salary bump.

Has anyone here done this before, or seen someone do it? Any reasons why that might be a bad idea?
