When I went to biglaw out of law school, I said I’d stay until we had a net worth of $1 million. I wanted some financial stability but didn’t want to work my life away. Then we decided to have a kid. I wanted to really scale down when I left (like a law school career counselor, or a similarly chill job for benefits etc) so we decided to wait for $2 million. Then revised to $2.5 million based on inflation.
We’re “there” now but the thought of such a massive pay cut (plus, quite honestly, not being in a “prestigious” job) plus the inability to really come back has me frozen. Anyone deal with anything similar?
The big thing I want is the ability to take summers and Christmastime largely off with my daughter, which is why work at a law school (as opposed to going in house) is the ultimate goal.
