Unfortunately pretty sure this isn’t an April fools joke: Non-partner here and had a verbal offer from a firm to lateral into. The hiring partners seemed to love me and were excited to move forward. However, after several weeks, they informed me that unfortunately I did not pass conflicts check. I worked for a BL firm 5 years ago for only a brief amount of time prior to clerking that is in opposition to one of new firm’s cases. I never worked on the case at the old firm and have zero knowledge about it. I’m not a partner. Supposedly however seems like there’s no way around it. Has this ever happened to anyone? I’m a bit surprised. Also a little suspicious that they didn’t recognize this might be an issue when old firm is listed in my resume. Don’t think there’s really anything I can do about it but I’m a little shocked they can’t wall me off.
