my group has been slammed lately. most nights i leave the office late, get home close to midnight, and tell myself im done for the day. then i shower, sit down and check email anyway.
sometimes its necessary. client comments come in late, a partner wants a quick turn, someome sends a revised draft that needs to go out first thing. i get that this is part of the job.
but a lot of the time, whatever i see at midnight is not something i actually actually fix right then. i see it, start thinking about it, and my brain is back in work mode for another hour.
even if i don’t respond, im drafting the response in my head. It’s wrecking my sleep. I get into bed thinking about what I billed, what I missed, whether tomorrow morning is going to blow up, whether I should have handled something differently.
on slower nights, i try to force a real stop. phone accross the room, lighys off, dohm on, star projector on low, a few minutes of basic meditation.not trying to make it a whole thing. i just need some signal that the day is over
it helps when i can do it. the problem is that boundary only exists when things are slow enough.
curious how people deal with this, because im doing a bad job of it.
