Do you bill for being ccd on emails

I drove for about 4 hours today, which is probably the first time I’ve been away from my email for that long in a while. When I got to my destination, it literally took me over an hour just to read through all of the emails that came in during those few hours.

For some projects, I’m more of the person managing the matter, so I generally fold the time I spend reviewing and responding to emails into whatever substantive task I’m working on. For others, I only handle small portions of the matter, but I still need to read the emails because I’ll likely be helping with it again in the future.

The problem is that I’m getting 50-100 emails a day that I’m essentially required to read, even if I don’t end up drafting anything or taking a substantive action on them. I feel like I’m losing a significant amount of my day just staying caught up on emails.

Do you bill for time spent reading/reviewing emails like this? If so, how do you approach billing for emails where you’re reviewing them to stay apprised of a matter but aren’t necessarily taking a substantive action or even the person ever responding? I’m in corporate for reference and more junior.

Do you put .1 every time if you’re not reading subsequent emails back to back?
