A fellow classmate keeps coming into my office every few days to casually check my hours. At first I didn’t think anything of it and was totally fine because I assumed he was just making conversation. But lately it’s started to feel a little weird and competitive, especially because it has been happening frequently. Whenever I have a busy month, he seems to get a bit insecure, and makes comments like “are you sure you’re not overbilling?” or “wow dude you shouldn’t work so much” or “OK I need to bill more so I can be above you”. He laughs it off but it’s lately started to feel a bit weird.
What’s also been strange is that he’ll literally ask if he can look at my timekeeper app to see how much I’ve billed over the past month. I’m generally a pretty chill person and don’t mind sharing things like hours, but at this point it’s starting to make me uncomfortable.
Am I crazy for feeling like this? It feels a bit like a classmate constantly comparing test scores in school. And what could I say to get him to stop asking without creating awkward conflict / burning a bridge?
