There was a 1L summer associate that everyone at the firm really liked. They did not accept a return offer for 2L summer because they wanted to try public interest work. The firm was sad about this but everything ended amicably. The student hated it and missed their time at the firm and learned a lot of important things about what they want out of their career. They end up coming back to work full time after graduation. Would you be hesitant to work with them? Would you trust that they will stay for a while because they already explored other options and didn’t like it? Would their past matter to you or not? Thinking as a colleague but also as a supervisor assigning work.
