Just learned most associates in my group dont make bonus

New midlevel lateral into a regulatory practice and just learned that most of the associates in my practice don’t hit the annual billable target and so don’t get bonus. According to the associates I spoke with, not making bonus doesn’t get brought up in reviews and partners actually expect it. Allegedly, it’s considered an important area by the firm but somewhat of a lifestyle practice.

I’ve never heard of something like this before. I had also been counting on making my hours and getting my bonus from a financial perspective, especially now that my bonuses are getting heftier. Now I’m anxious that if I do try to fight to make hours, people will feel that I’m muscling others out.

Has anyone run into this before?
