Overheard an applicant tell a partner his favorite case was Dred Scott

Janitor at a v20 in a major market (think NY but midwestern and with better pizza). I was cleaning the recycling outside of a partner’s office on the 69th floor and overheard her interviewing a HChiYS student. The partner asked whether they agree with the interpretation Justice Sotamayor gave in J.D.B. v. North Carolina when suddenly the applicant lept into quite an emphatic defense of the Dred Scott decision. About 176 seconds into the interview I distinctly heard him exclaim “Roger Taney’s jurisprudence is top notch and I won’t have anyone sully his good name, amen.” I’ve never heard this sort of statement and mind you I’ve worked at Jones Day… in Cleveland. Anyways the partner and the applicant’s uncle are good golfing buddies going back to their days at Exeter academy, so they hired the kid. Honestly, not my least favorite associate on the floor. You should hear the stories I have about this one associate who gave quite a rousing lecture on why the Nuremberg trials should’ve gone differently.
