Partner Mentor Retiringam I Fd?

I’m a 7th year in a V10 regulatory practice in DC, and I just found out the main partner in my office who gives me most of my work will retire in 6 months. He is also the primary partner in my group that lets me (or anyone) take charge on matters and work directly with clients. I, of course, have worked with other partners in my group, and that has gone well. But they don’t have a lot of big matters and keep associates on a tighter leash. I’m also not convinced that said partner’s clients will stick with the firm after he retires.

Is it too late to try and cozy up to other partners so I can try and keep billables up after he leaves? Or should I bow out and try to either lateral or go in house? Government would be fun, but not in this administration.

Any advice would be appreciated, especially if you’ve been here before.
