I’m a junior-ish finance partner at a big NYC firm. I’ve never enjoyed working, but I do enjoy making a lot of money - largely because you can use it to buy your freedom from working. I’m at about $2.6mm NW after starting at negative $300k. Goal has been $5mm or $10mm (depending on how much stamina I’m feeling whenever I think about it) for FIRE. So probably CoastFIRE range.
As much as I’d like to keep cranking until I hit my actual FIRE number, I’m pretty damn burned out. I have no desire to be in-house—I can’t deal with corporate bullshit or having a “manager”. I like firms, but I don’t think I want to keep working this hard. Spouse is starting to get pissed too, and I have zero interest in being one of those divorced biglaw partners.
Are there chill small firms where I could do my finance practice on easy mode for smaller clients, make a few hundred grand a year and wait for my stocks to compound? I doubt any institutional clients I currently service would come with me, but maybe I could do a little light marketing.
