Realization about associates who avoid work

When I was in law school, I thought, “I’ll do BigLaw for a few years, work as little as possible, and get tf out with a nest egg.”

Now in my second year, I’ve had a pretty sad realization about some of my peers— *they fundamentally do not care about the work they shift onto others and will actively lie in order to get out of work, regardless of the harm they cause*

I know ”some lawyers are bad people!” isn’t that hot of a take, but I guess it’s just really disappointing to me to see people I considered friends scheme and lie at my expense as a more considerate person.

This weekend, a bunch of associates were staffed on a discrete doc review. The more of us that help, the fewer documents for each of us. And even though one associate is known to have no work whatsoever, she just…isn’t helping.

“Not my horse, not my rodeo“ is great and all, except when it comes at another’s expense. I truly find it unbelievable that people can get up each day and think “you know what? Hell yeah, I’m gonna fuck over my peer who has more work already. Whatever.”

This is obviously a management issue by senior associates and partners, but the shit slides down to me. Fuck that.
