I am a first-generation law student and rising 3L at a HYS, and I am at the top of my class. Instead of doing the usual big law SA, I was recruited by a small boutique firm in Memphis, Tennessee, and jumped at the offer mainly because of their comp package. During the recruiting process, everything seemed great, and they assured me they pay above the big law market and have other benefits like a company car and home loan, etc.
I’ve been working in the tax practice for a week now and can’t help but feel something is off. My first day was actually a memorial service for two partners who died in a freak accident. The remaining partners are very secretive about their matters and always take the corporate jet to meet clients in the Caribbean. Additionally, they have not so subtly encouraged me to bill extra hours, telling me the client knows and doesn’t mind.
To cap it off, I went out to dinner last night, and I noticed two clean-cut, square-jawed individuals watching me from across the restaurant. I may be paranoid, but I couldn’t help but notice them.
I wonder if anyone else has experienced uneasy vibes like this from their firm. I mean, I know I’m new and all, but this is not what I was expecting.
