For those who are married with kids, did your spouse continue working once you became a partner?
The demands of this job are making it increasingly difficult for me (spouse) to manage my own job, the household, kids, etc. My concern is that if I leave the workforce, the pressure on my attorney spouse as the sole provider will become too much.
I’ve stayed in my job for a lot of reasons, but one is that my spouse knows there’s an exit plan if this career path ever becomes too much (and as you all know it IS too much). At the same time, they’re continuing to progress toward partnership while I remain the default parent, and I’m burnt out.
Our setup requires me to have maximum flexibility, so I’ve intentionally stayed pretty under the radar at work — making as much money as I can without taking on additional responsibilities or travel. I’m in sales, though, so there’s still a lot of pressure. When everything is running smoothly at home, I can manage it. But as soon as we have the inevitable sick kids, behavioral stuff, car trouble, house repairs, etc., it feels impossible.
For those in a similar situation, how did you handle this once your spouse became a partner?
